DIM Weight Calculator
What is DIM Weight?
Dimensional weight reflects package density, which is the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. The dimensional weight should be calculated on every shipment and compared to its actual weight, then use the greater of the two to determine the shipping cost. Shipment dimensional weights are calculated based in different factors using the formulas below. DIM weights are always expressed in pounds.
Domestic Calculations
Air Shipments: 194 cubic inches per pound
Example: L x W x H (in inches) / 194= Dimensional Weight in pounds
48x48x60=138,240 cubic inches / 194 = 712 pounds
International Calculations
Option 1: Utilizing the standard calculation in pounds, & converting to Kg
Example: L x W x H (in inches) / 166= Dimensional Weight in pounds
Pounds / 2.2 = “X” Kg
Example: 48x48x60= 138,240 cubic inches / 166 = 832 pounds,
832 pounds = 378 kg
Option 2: Utilizing the calculation for metric (Centimeters and kg) & Converting to pounds
6,000 cubic centimeters per kg
Example: L x W x H (in centimeters) / 6000 = Dimensional Weight in Kg
Example: 122 cm x 122 cm x 152 cm = 2,262,368 / 6,000 kg = 377 kg
377 kg = 832 lbs
Deciding Between DIM or Actual
DIM Weight = 500 pounds / Actual Weight= 600 pounds
You would rate the actual number because it is greater between the two.
